  • I ran the WWWP5k this morning and there’s still time for you to sign up! Wait, how does that work?

Any time between Monday, September 19th to Sunday, September 25th, travel a 5k anyway you’d like. Walk along the beach. Run on your treadmill. Jog with your dog. Hike in the woods.

Once you’ve done your 5k, post about it on your WordPress site, tag the post with wwwp5k, and publish it for the world to see. Need a WordPress site? Start one for free on WordPress.com.

Since Automattic is currently gathered in Whistler, BC, Canada for our annual Grand Meetup I had the pleasure of running with about 100 of my colleagues near our hotels. It was a rainy and wet, but not as cold as you’d think! Having not run once since my last 5k in May it wasn’t exactly my best performance but I did enjoy the outing.

To encourage Automatticians to join in this mornings run, we’re making a donation to Soles4Souls for every participant here at our Grand Meetup. How could I pass that up? Totally worth getting up early.

  • Last night I gave a short talk at the WordPress Louisville meetup. The idea of child themes had been mentioned tangentially during other talks, but I thought I’d explain them head-on for a few minutes. My slides (including the couple videos) are in the Cloudup stream below, along with a few links.

  • The monthly WordPress meetup is upon us! I’ll be talking child themes, Scott Gilbertson is going over image optimization, and we have another guest speaker showing off some professional WordPress creations.

It’s a laid-back meeting with lots of opportunities for questions, discussion, and finding help for any problems you may have with your own projects.

RSVP to attend on the Meetup.com event.

  • At last week’s WordPress Louisville meetup, I got the ball rolling on discussion for a WordCamp Louisville 2016. It got more interest than I would’ve guessed, and had several people all express a willingness to help. But no one seemed too interested in being a lead organizer. So I decided I’d wrangle that job, since a lot of people were there and willing to help.

Since then, I’ve worked with WordCamp Central to become the lead organizer of an upcoming WordCamp Louisville. There’s nothing official to announce other than we’re now in pre-planning and it’s my fault if we don’t get beyond that.

There’s been some continued planning in the #WordPress channel of the louisville.io slack team, and we’ve decided to meet in-person next week on Thursday, March 24th at 6pm to start planning stuff we need to figure out early on. These include venues (and backups,) potential sponsors, and divvying up some of the jobs that need to be handled in these next few months. If you love WordPress and want to help, let me know and I’d love to have you join us.

If you’d like to volunteer at, or even just attend, the WordCamp later this year please let me know that too. These early planning meetings would not be necessary for you, but I’ll surely be contacting you closer to the event.

  • On Saturday, March 5th, I’ll be volunteering at the Happiness Bar for WordCamp Dayton. Tickets to the event are already sold out, but if you happen to be going I’ll see you there.

Recently the organizer of our WordPress Louisville meetup also put out a call for assistance. Our meetup on Tuesday, March 8th will be my first as one of the new assistant organizers.

Since I don’t leave the house much anymore with the new baby needing attention, I’m especially looking forward to getting out and talking WordPress at these upcoming events.

  • Just got done telling everybody at WordPress Louisville about the new WordPress.com and the WordPress.com Mac app last night.

Today the app for Windows got released!

You can download the app for Windows (or Mac) at https://desktop.wordpress.com/

  • I like Treehouse. Most of the education that got me ready for Automattic, the first job I’ve felt truly suited me, came from lessons there. But I think this was a bad move on their part. Zac is handling this well and I’ll be looking for his resources because he’s a skilled teacher. I encourage you to do the same!

This last week has been quite a week for me.  Treehouse, The online learning company where I have been teaching WordPress for the last 3+ years told me that they were going to stop teaching WordPress, give my salary to a .NET teacher, and fire me.  That was Monday.

On Friday the same week, WordCamp US started.  Between Monday and Thursday I knew I had to come up with some new idea of how to support myself and then get to WordCamp US to connect with the community about the idea and see if it would work.

My idea is simple, keep teaching WordPress.  I have been teaching WordPress long before Treehouse and apparently I will be teaching WordPress long after Treehouse too 😉

What I really want to share in this post though is the love and support and sustaining energy I felt from attending WordCamp US, sharing my idea with people, and getting their feedback.

  • It was a pleasure to speak on The New WordPress.com, “Calypso,” at our December meetup for WordPress Louisville. I didn’t do much by way of slides, but if you’d like to run through them again or would like access to some of the links I mentioned, I’ve got them after the jump.

  • A couple weeks ago we launched the New WordPress.com, a project we code-named “Calypso” at Automattic.

If you’d like to hear more about Calypso, I’ll be speaking about it for tomorrow’s meeting of WordPress Louisville.

The meeting starts at 6:15pm on Tuesday, Dec. 8th. Hosted by Mirazon Group at 1640 Lyndon Farm Court #102, Louisville, KY, 40223. It’s free to attend, but it’s helpful if you’ll join the WordPress Louisville meetup and RSVP to the night’s event. If you have any questions, please comment here or join the #wordpress channel in the louisville.io Slack.
